March 1, 2005 20:10 - Disney animation classic Bambi gets complete digital makeover...

Hello All,

Is there a child born in the last six decades who wasn't in some way emotionally walloped by Bambi?

What begins as a sweet, innocent, 1942 animated feature turns intensely traumatic for pre-school viewers when (no spoiler here, we hope) Bambi's mother is killed by human hunters at about the midway point. It happens offscreen, of course, and was eventually trumped by the onscreen paternal death in The Lion King in 1994.

But for most youngsters in the western world, this is their first confrontation with the concept of mortality. Now, Bambi (Platinum Edition) (Disney) comes to DVD in a gorgeously restored two-disc addition to the studio's elite Platinum Edition series. And young and old alike are sure to be "twitterpatted" all over again.

March 9, 2005 18:57 - DVD Uncovers Story of Wilson's 'Smile' ...

Hello All,

Rhino has set a May 24 release date for the DVD "Brian Wilson Presents Smile," chronicling the making of the former Beach Boys leader's long-lost masterwork.

Disc one of the set encompasses the Showtime documentary "Beautiful Dreamer: Brian Wilson and the Story of Smile," plus four interviews with Wilson, one of which was conducted by "Smile" lyricist Van Dyke Parks.

The second disc sports a full performance of the album mixed in 5.1 Surround Sound, outtakes from the documentary, footage from the recording of the album and Wilson performing five songs at his piano, both solo and in collaboration with band members.

Wilson recently won his first Grammy for album track "Mrs. O'Leary's Cow," which was named best rock instrumental. The artist will perform "Smile" in its entirety on a summer North American tour, which will run from Aug. 9 in Boston to Sept. 4 in Los Angeles.

Wilson is already writing songs for his next work. "I think it will be a rock 'n' roll album," he told Billboard. "Wouldn't that be great? 'Smile' was a pop album. We need rock 'n' roll for sure. We just want to try to make something that makes people get out of their seats and dance."

March 15, 2005 00:52 - Mickey Mouse Club, The - Celebrate 50 years of Disneyland with a Best-of DVD of the Original Club

Hello All,

Last December saw the release of The Mickey Mouse Club - Walt Disney Treasures, bringing the first week of the original 1955 series to DVD. Fans have clamored for more, and now they are getting it!

Rather than simply continuing with the second week of the series, though, Disney seems to have opted to move to a "best-of" format, at least to celebrate their "Disneyland 50th Anniversary". Amazon.com has now added a listing for The Mickey Mouse Club - The Best Of. This single-disc release ships on July 12th, and $14.99 is the cost (Amazon sells it currently for $10.49, though).

March 16, 2005 20:41 - NEW TITANIC SETS TO SAIL OCTOBER

Hello All,

Director James Cameron is going back to Titanic again, but this time he's returning to his blockbuster hit.

The 1997 Titanic movie is being readied for a long-awaited two-disc special edition and a four-disc collector's edition to be released in October by Paramount Home Entertainment (domestic) and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment (international). The film's plain vanilla version, released in 1999, was the first DVD to ship more than a million units.

The time gap between the standard and special editions is remarkable, Cameron said at an announce event at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel here. He attributed it to continued successful sales of the original DVD as well as creative factors.

March 20, 2005 14:21 - NY Police break DVD piracy ring

Hello All,

Three men were arrested for counterfeiting following a New York Police Department bust of a movie and music pirating ring.

Police said the ring produced as many as half a million counterfeit DVDs from a basement of a house in Queens, the New York Post reported Friday.

Three man were charged Thursday with counterfeiting and trademark infringement and could be sentenced to 15 years in prison if found guilty.

Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said the house was filled with flat-screen televisions and DVD burners.

Brown said the men were "cheating companies and artists out of substantial sums in lost royalties and ripping off honest customers who are forces to pay higher prices," the Post reported.

March 21, 2005 19:20 - DVD pirates wield a 'dagger'

Hello All,

Dan Glickman was in a Mexico City street market this month when a movie for sale caught his eye.

It was a pirated DVD of the Vin Diesel film The Pacifier, which had opened at No. 1 in theaters only five days earlier. It was also produced by Glickman's son, Jonathan.

When the elder Glickman called his son to tell him of the find, the response was immediate. "He said, 'What are you going to do about it, Dad?' " Dan Glickman recalls.

Glickman, the new head of the Motion Picture Association of America, heard the question often last week at the ShoWest convention of theater owners.

March 23, 2005 20:25 - Format wars won't hinder DVD sales...

Hello All,

Published DVD products will rake in $76.5 billion worldwide in 2009, up from about $33 billion last year, In-Stat/MDR said Tuesday.

That means the battle over next-generation DVD formats won't slow sales, the market researcher said.

The HD DVD format--which allows for high-definition discs that hold up to 30GB of data--will lead in the near future, the market researcher said. An added benefit of HD DVD is that the technology is backward-compatible with current DVDs.

But Blu-Ray products will start gaining in 2006, spreading from Asia to Europe and the rest of the world in 2007, In-Stat said. Blu-Ray discs can store up to 50GB of data; by comparison, current DVDs can store up to 9GB for dual-sided discs, roughly 4.5GB per side.
