Ulead First to Receive the DVD-Video Verification Logo for DVD Video Recording Format

As initially announced in Taiwan on January 24th, Ulead Systems, Inc., a leader in digital imaging, video, and DVD software, was the first software company to have its DVD technology pass the DVD Format/Logo Licensing Corporation (FLLC) verification process and be awarded the right to carry the DVD-Video logo. The DVD Logo indicates that all Ulead DVD authoring products such as DVD MovieFactory and DVD DiskRecorder* can burn DVD-RW and DVD-RAM discs that are compatible and can be played on most set-top DVD recorders that support the DVD-VR format.

February 2, 2005 09:38 - Singer accused of stealing 'Potter' DVD ...

Hello all,

I thought this was kinda funny so I figured I'd share it with you...

Lynn Anderson has been accused of shoplifting a "Harry Potter" DVD from a Taos supermarket and punching a police officer.

Anderson's lawyer entered pleas of not guilty on behalf of the 57-year-old country singer to charges of battery on a police officer, resisting a police officer and shoplifting.

Taos County Magistrate Betty Martinez allowed Anderson to seek medical treatment out of state after the pleas were entered Friday. Martinez said she didn't know why Anderson was seeking medical treatment.

February 2, 2005 22:06 - The New Format War ...

by Guido Henkel

Many of you have probably noticed that I have been conspicuously quiet and restrained on the subject of high definition DVD to this point. This has nothing to do with disinterest, of course, but more with the fact that I just wanted to see how things develop before building an opinion and making it public.

Recently I visited the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas in hopes to find out some more hard facts and up-to-date details about the two proposed formats, HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. After walking the floor, seeing many of the presentations I found one of my concerns sadly reinforced. I was utterly unimpressed with HD-DVD. Seriously! You can tell from its positioning, the way it’s being bullishly promoted, etc. that HD-DVD is a format that is created to fill an artificially created demand that does not exist. Worst of all however, it looks pretty poor.

Hello all,

It looks like everyone, including myself, is starting to jump on the used DVD bandwagon.

Sales of used, or "previously viewed" DVDs shot up 72% to $658 million last year, according to newly released data from Rentrak Corp.

Rentrak began weekly tracking of used sales in October. Combined sales of DVD and VHS titles rose 27% to $920 million in 2004.

"[Previously viewed] sales have become a significant revenue stream for retailers to complement traditional a la carte movie rentals," said Brad Hackley, VP business development at Rentrak.

Sell-through retailers acquire the product from...

February 5, 2005 20:05 - Universal may start charging for music videos on TV & Online

Up until now, record labels have treated music videos as a free method of promoting its music. As a result, websites, cable and satellite TV operators have been providing music video stations free of charge or at least included as part of their basic package. MTV was given virtually free access to music videos from the early 80’s which helped promote the label’s music. At present, some on-demand online music video websites such as from AOL are doing so well that they are probably as important as promoting music on the radio. Unfortunately

Hello all,

Here's an article I thought you might be interested in.

"One of the internal documents titled "Kazaa Technology 2004" written by Sharman's chief technology officer discusses how awful its own software really is. Sharman's employees actually hated even installing software due to bad effects the software has on their computers. It mentions that Sharman needs to be careful to avoid installing too much adware during Kazaa's installation.

The effects of the adware not only affect Kazaa, but also..."

February 7, 2005 20:17 - My thoughts on DVD Rental...

Hello all,

I've been thinking today that instead of giving you a story about DVDs, I might share with you a couple thoughts on DVDs as well as Blogging and give you a couple of good sources.

I've been thinking about the DVD Rental aspect of DVDs and I've been comparing the "Big 3". By that I mean Netflix, Blockbuster, and Wal-Mart.

In my personal opinion, I still think that Netflix is the best. Yes, I know that Blockbuster has stores all over the place and they offer free in store DVD Rentals at times but I think the Netflix is the one that started all the Rent DVDs hoopla and they are the one's that have perfected the concept.

Hello all,

Happy Valentines Day from the Cheap-DVDs-Advisor.com family.

Here's a neat little article I found for you...

"Well, another Valentine’s Day is upon us and a large majority of you, our dear readers, are going to snuggle up with your significant other to watch a DVD in the privacy of your own home...and hopefully for the sake of your neighbours with the shades drawn. But first you’ll head to the local video store or other favourite such establishment to select said DVD and here is where, according to my own, unscientific studies, 50% of all Valentine’s Day spats begin—selecting which movie to watch."

February 15, 2005 20:35 - Saw Out On DVD Today...

Hello all,

I went out and picked up the "Saw" DVD today. I've already seen it in the movie theater of course and I liked it a lot. I wouldn't quite put in the same league as "Silence of the Lambs" but I would definitely put it next to "Se7en".

I can't wait to break the seal on this baby and pop it in the DVD player.

I also picked up "Shark Tales" for the wife and kids. I will check this one out as well since I have never seen it before and the kids all said it was good when they saw it at the movies.

Well, I'm going to get back to work so I can check these DVDs out.

February 16, 2005 20:35 - New technology helps curb online DVD piracy...

Hello all,

Seems like there is some bad news on the Copy DVDs front.

A Silicon Valley company unveiled Tuesday a new technology that it claims to be able to block 97 percent of the DVD-copying software used by Internet pirates, without interfering with a DVD's paly ability or picture quality.

Macrovision Corp. said its RipGuard system, which can be included in personal computers, DVD players and DVD recorders, would plug the digital hole through which unauthorized versions of DVD films can be easily copied on a computer and then "burned" to other discs or put online for downloading.

The company is just the first of several...

February 18, 2005 20:05 - 'Uncopyable' DVD technology claimed...

Hello all,

The Macrovision Corp. claims its new technology will eliminate most casual DVD piracy on personal computers, reports PC Pro.

The Los Angeles-based company says the system, known as RipGuard DVD, does not require any additional hardware or software on a PC, but any attempt to rip a DVD will simply cause the ripper to crash.

The company would only say its RipGuard DVD uses the Universal Disk Format for DVDs to prevent the file being ripped to a PC's hard disk before it can be copied to a blank disk.

February 20, 2005 18:07 - Elektra is hitting DVD in April...

We just got word that the comic book adaptation of Elektra starring Jennifer Garner is already making its DVD debut on April 5. The film’s super-lukewarm box office reception may have contributed to the fast to-video turnaround, but here she comes...

Elektra will feature an anamorphic widescreen transfer, of course, and will also be available separately as a pan & scan version. The release contains a selection of Deleted Scenes as well as a Making Of Featurette and a Featurette called Inside The Editing Room - maybe to show you how to attempt the illusion – and fail – to make people with no martial arts experience look like they are actually doing something.

Elektra will have a low $19.95 price tag and will be found in retail stores on April 5.

Hello All,

In a 10-hour TV mini-series, "Reilly - The Ace Of Spies" tells the amazing story about one of Britain's most notorious heroes. A&E Home Entertainment is now bringing this fascinating and highly authentic tale of the man who served as the real-life template for James Bond to DVD in a 4-disc DVD set.

The studio has sponsored five copies of the set for dvdreview.com to give away among our readers. All you have to do is answer the trivia question below and submit it to us by February 28. From the submissions we will then randomly select five lucky winners!.

February 27, 2005 21:43 - HP & Dell back Blu-Ray Next Gen DVD Recordable...

Hello All,

Hewlett-Packard and Dell have lined up behind a blue-laser optical disc technology backed by Sony and others, the latest development in a simmering DVD format battle. HP and Dell said they are supporting the "Blu-ray Disc" format, which uses blue laser light to squeeze more than four hours of high definition video onto a single-sided disc.

Blue-laser drives are considered a successor to today's red-laser DVD drives. Blu-ray Disc technology allows for up to 27GB of storage on a single-sided disc, compared with 4.7GB for current DVDs. Additionally, Blu-ray Disc backers are working on a dual-layer disc that can hold about 50GB of data."
